The two companies will develop driver assistance systems, highly automated driving on the highway and automatic parking technology to create a “scalable automated driving platform” that is expected to be launched on a large scale starting in 2024. Once the study is completed, the two companies plan to offer this scalable platform to other licensed car manufacturers.

The development of autonomous driving technology will require more than 1,200 experts to work together. The research will be distributed in three technical centers, the BMW Group's autonomous driving park near Munich, the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center in Sindelfingen, and the Imenden. The Daimler Test and Technology Center.

In addition to the agreement to jointly develop autonomous driving technology, the two companies also announced that they are negotiating to expand the partnership to work involving urban areas and downtown automation.

The cooperation between BMW and Daimler is non-exclusive, and the two companies said they are open to other car manufacturers and technology companies to join the partnership.
